Sonic's Different Racing Games
Sonic Drift
Sonic Drift is a 1994 kart racing game developed and published by Sega for the Sega Game Gear, marking the first racing title in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It was originally released only in Japan on March 18, 1994, and later included in compilations like Sonic Adventure DX (2003), Sonic Mega Collection Plus (2004), and Sonic Origins Plus (2023). The game’s story is brief but sets up the racing premise: At the start of the race, Dr. Eggman is driving his Egg Typhoon and bragging about being the greatest scientist in the world. His boasting is interrupted by Sonic the Hedgehog, who enters the race in his Cyclone, declaring he’ll win either way. Miles “Tails” Prower joins in, confident in his MTP-01 Whirlwind. Amy Rose arrives in her Breeze, but she and Tails realize Sonic has already started. Eggman, left alone, continues to boast, unaware of the competition. Players race against the other three characters, collecting rings for special moves and navigating tracks with a focus on drifting. Each character has unique strengths and weaknesses, and the game includes modes like Chaos GP, Free Run, and Versus.
Sonic Riders
Sonic Riders (2006) is a racing game developed by Sonic Team and published by Sega, created to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It introduced the Extreme Gear — hoverboards, hoverbikes, and hover skates — as the main racing vehicles. The game’s narrative is told through its Story Mode and follows two main storylines: the Heroes (Sonic, Tails, Knuckles) and the Babylon Rogues (Jet, Wave, Storm). One night in Metal City, Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles are searching for a Chaos Emerald. Tails’ detector picks up interference, and three figures crash through a window on Extreme Gear, fleeing with the Emerald. The trio chases them, leading to a confrontation with the Babylon Rogues. Sonic gains a new rival, and the next day, Dr. Eggman announces the EX World Grand Prix — a high-stakes Extreme Gear tournament where each entrant must pay a Chaos Emerald as entry. The winner will claim all seven Chaos Emeralds. The Babylon Rogues are revealed to be descendants of the Babylonians, an ancient civilization whose treasure Eggman is secretly after. The Rogues themselves are also after this treasure, making them both allies and rivals to Eggman.
Sonic Racing CrossWorlds
The latest Sonic racing game, Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds, blends high-speed kart racing with a light narrative that ties the races into a larger, interconnected story. The game reimagines Sonic’s racing universe as a connected racing adventure rather than just a competition-focused experience. Instead of isolated races, the plot frames the events as part of a larger conflict — a mysterious entity is said to be controlling the racing dimension, and the races become both a test of speed and a way to protect Sonic’s world and allies. Characters from across the Sonic universe — including Sonic, Shadow, Knuckles, Tails, etc. — have distinct story roles. Their races are driven by personal goals, rivalries, and the shared mission to counter the mysterious force. The game balances fan-favorite racing mechanics (Travel Rings, CrossWorlds, gadgets, and Extreme Gear boards) with a light RPG-style progression and narrative.
